Student Guide and Timetable

College Guidance begins in the 9th grade with students’ selection of classes.  Group parent and student programs (which are provided in the spring of a student’s 8th grade year) are designed to give an overview as well as a focus to the priorities and direction for the years ahead.  The following calendar reflects the College Counseling component of a students’ progress during the course of the next four years.  Each student is assigned a College Counselor as they enter the 9th grade and this Counselor serves as an academic mentor as well as a College Counselor during the student’s high school career.

  • Freshmen take the ACT “Explore” test (a pre-ACT and general career test).
  • Explore test seminar (distribution of test results and explanation).
  • Spotlight on College: For Parents (a varied menu of seminars available to all parents at every grade level.
  • Group seminars for parents and students for 10th grade course scheduling.
  • V.I.P. breaks – Counselors meet 9th graders in small groups during first semester.
  • Sophomores and parents may meet with College representatives who visit our campus during the course of the fall season.
  • National Christian College Fair takes place on Oaks Christian campus – Sophomores and parents are invited to attend.
  • Let’s Talk College seminar is a required evening event for students and their parents (in early October).
  • Spotlight on College: For Parents (a varied menu of seminars available to all parents at every grade level).
  • All Sophomores take the PSAT in October and the Pre-ACT – called, The PLAN, in November or December.
  • Parent and student seminar on testing interpretation.
  • Winter and spring break college tours available to Sophomores.
  • Students and parents have individual meetings with College Counselors in spring semester.
  • Students and parents are urged to attend the National College Fair in Ventura.
  • All Juniors take the PSAT test for the second time.
  • Juniors and parents are invited to participate in the college rep visits on our campus.
  • National Christian College Fair takes place on Oaks Christian campus – Juniors and parents are invited to attend.
  • College Knowledge Night: Required for all Juniors and parents (early February).
  • College Exploration Day: Required for all Juniors (students board buses and go to a day of seminars and college exploration at 4 different campuses in the local vicinity).
  • Spotlight on College: For Parents (a varied menu of seminars available to all parents at every grade level).
  • Individual college guidance appointments with College Counselor addressing all areas of concern in the months ahead).
  • Winter and spring break college tours available to Juniors.
  • Semester SAT practice class available to Juniors.
  • Semester College Exploration course available to Juniors.
  • Juniors take first SAT or ACT test and Subject Tests.
  • Students and parents are urged to attend the National College Fair in Ventura.
  • Case Studies event: All parents and students should attend this Mock Admission Committee event presented by four schools in the L.A. area and followed by a College Fair.
  • Junior Questionnaire and Parent Questionnaire is assigned.
  • Counseling Summer Institute (C.S.I.) available to Juniors (Intensive college preparations workshop which meets every day, all day for one week during the summer.
  • Senior Parent Night
  • Second opportunity to retake SAT, ACT and/or Subject Tests.
  • College representatives meet with Seniors and parents during Fall season.
  • Seniors may take Fall semester College Application Preparation class.
  • Seniors submit summer assignment college essay drafts.
  • College Counselors prepare School Letters of Recommendation for all Seniors.
  • Spotlight on College: For Parents (a varied menu of seminars available to all parents at every grade level).
  • All college applications submitted by February 1 with guidance for College Counselors.
  • Assistance and direction in applying for Financial Aid and Scholarships.
  • Counseling on dealing with denials and making an appropriate college choice.
