Middle School Nurse Leslie Heimbuch has been leading medical missions to Uganda since 2006, partnering with an organization called Africa Renewal Ministries. This summer was the second time Oaks Christian School students and alumni joined the mission team to experience a unique trip designed for students interested in nursing or medicine. A total of 10 students and eight alumni joined the team this year.

Over 1,300 patients were seen during a five-day free medical clinic. The students and alumni worked in pharmacy, lab, dentistry, wound care, and eye care. They also shadowed the physicians, gaining an amazing opportunity to see first-hand how medicine is practiced in a developing country.
Also, joining the team was Wendi Klaiber, OCS high school math teacher and the OCS 2016-17 High School Teacher of the Year. Klaiber designed a program to give seven of the students interested in pursuing education an opportunity to serve at God Cares Secondary School. They did classroom observations, a full day teacher workshop for 31 teachers from five different schools, and then demonstration lessons in classrooms over the course of three days.
OCS Associate Head of School for Spiritual Life Dee Dee Mayer also joined the team this year, supporting the students in both the medical and teaching components of the trip.
