Sticky Faith Seminars for Parents Support Adolescent Faith Development and a Positive Transition into Adulthood

Oaks Christian Online (OCO), one of the finest college preparatory online schools in the nation and the founding school of the Online Christian Consortium (OCC), is in its third year of providing specialized seminars for parents on practical strategies to help nurture life-long faith in teens.

Oaks Christian Online's Spiritual Director Samantha Farinacci leads these seminars two times per year, in March and in November. Ms. Farinacci's seminars are based on the Fuller Youth Institute's Sticky Faith research studies on the developmental phase of adolescence and spirituality. The Fuller Youth Institute is associated with The Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, one of the most influential Christian seminaries in the world.

According to Farinacci, both secular and religious resources confirm the value of faith during adolescent development. She states, "faith and spirituality are major factors in a healthy transition into adulthood and are associated with positive development and 1 lower levels of depression and at risk behaviors, such as drug and alcohol use." Farinacci points out that the Sticky Faith research identified that 40-50 percent of adolescents raised in active Christian families ended up drifting from their faith. This discovery prompted the Fuller Youth Institute to explore how to strengthen long-lasting faith development in youth.

Practical considerations such as surrounding children with at least five adults that are committed to their spiritual growth, giving teens permission to doubt and question their faith, and practicing regular acts of forgiveness as a family, are a few of the strategies parents can use to help keep their teens engaged and involved in Christian life.

The Online Christian Consortium of which Oaks Christian Online is the founding school, offers these seminars to partner schools and their parents. Oaks Christian Online High School has intentionally integrated and applied the Sticky Faith research into its curriculum development, teacher training and parent resources. For example, Dr. Kara Powell and Dr. Chap Clark, two of the authors of the Sticky Faith books, have participated in online seminars in the Spiritual Life course for senior students about how to transition faith practices from high school to college.

The next Sticky Faith Seminar will be held in March 2017 and will explore new dimensions of the research and will offer new ways to apply it to Oaks Christian Online students as well as the students the Consortium serves. For more information please contact us at: 818-575-9900.

OCO Freshmen Bond Over Science, Passions and College Plans

Oaks Christian Online School freshmen, Jonathan Pegram, Devon Watson, Ethan Saucedo and Samantha D'Ambrosio, meet regularly for science labs on the main campus of Oaks Christian School in order to meet the University of California requirement for in person labs in their UC approved Biology course. The students spend two, eight-hour days per semester working with a science teacher on experiments and dissections. Devon, who would like to be a chemical engineer one day, particularly liked the fetal pig dissection in the labs held on April 16th. The freshmen are all full-time, online students and come from as far away as Sunnyvale, in central California, to participate in on-campus labs. Students in Physics, Chemistry, Marine Biology and AP Biology also come to campus that day, and these lab students can be from the Oaks Christian main campus, from other local schools or in the full-time, online program.
