Seniors Selected As Semifinalists

Among Less Than 1% of Students Nationwide

Congratulations to seniors Sterling Drummond and Claire Nguyen for earning semifinalist recognition in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSP), the nation's most prestigious academic scholarship program honoring high school seniors with outstanding academic ability and potential for success in college.

As semifinalists, the OCS seniors are among a group of students who represents less than 1% of American high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

Drummond and Nguyen have the chance to move to the finals where they can compete for a National Merit Scholarship that will be offered in the spring. The program awards nearly $30 million annually. The majority of semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and more than half of the finalists win a scholarship.

As juniors, Drummond and Nguyen entered the NMSP by taking the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship qualifying test. Along with test scores and strong academic records, candidates must also have outstanding community service.

Additionally, Drummond is a gifted orator, serving as the president of the Speech and Debate Club, and has won numerous awards and accolades at speech meets.

Nguyen is an athlete on the girls varsity basketball team, and is also active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes club.
