Former NCAA All-American and current Middle School Athletics Assistant Cheyenne Coyle has been named the Oaks Christian softball coach for the 2023 season, Head of Athletics Brad Cook announced.
Coyle has been the middle school athletics assistant at Oaks Christian since August 2022 and takes over the program after the passing of long-time Oaks Christian Softball Coach Peter Ackermann.
“Cheyenne has a heart for service, allowing her to build meaningful relationships as she leads our program,” Cook said. “Her experience as a coach at both the collegiate and high school level, as well as her own collegiate and professional playing experience makes her the perfect fit to continue to push our program to the next level.”
Coyle is a graduate of Arizona State University, where she played softball for two seasons. In her time at Arizona State, Coyle was named an NCAA Second-Team All-American. She hit 20 home runs as a junior, which at the time was tied for the best single-season home run production in Arizona State history.
Prior to playing at Arizona State, Coyle played at Florida for two seasons, and as a freshman was named to the Southeastern Conference All-Freshman Team. She played in one Women’s College World Series as a freshman at Florida, and earned All-Tournament Team honors.
“I am excited to get started,” Coyle said. “Obviously, I wish it were under better circumstances, but I am excited to find ways to honor Coach Pete Ackermann and his legacy throughout this season. This team is super talented, and I am excited to see what we can do both on and off the softball field this year.”
Coyle was an assistant coach at Austin Peay State University in Tennessee for one year, and a graduate assistant at Auburn University for two years. In her time at Auburn, the Tigers won 107 games, and finished as runners-up of the Women’s College World Series in 2016.
At the high school and club level, Coyle has coached the Orange County Batbusters, one of the top club softball programs in the country. She has also coached at Sierra Canyon, Harvard-Westlake and Pacifica High Schools.
Coyle was also an assistant coach to the Chinese National Softball Team as they prepared to qualify for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
Last year, the Lions had a record of 31-1, were CIF Semifinalists and won the CIF State Regional Title. This year’s first game is scheduled for February 28.
