Academy of Music and Business

The music industry has continued to evolve over the last 20 years, partially due to the emerging world of digital music. High School Digital Recording, Orchestra and Piano Teacher, Mary Kay Altizer, along with her OCS performing arts colleagues saw the opportunity in 2016 to expand the current curriculum to be more relevant.

Altizer traveled to Tingsryd, Sweden to explore a highly acclaimed program at the Academy of Music and Business (AMB) where students participate in a three-year curriculum where they collaborate with other musicians, hone their skills, and learn how to become successful entrepreneurs.

The trip resulted in the OCS Performing Arts Department launching a pilot project where 12 multi-faceted student-artists were grouped with 10 AMB students to collaborate on cover tunes using special recording tools.

Towards the end of the school year, the OCS students joined the AMB students in Sweden to perform at the American embassy in Stockholm and attended a reception held in their honor, to which the Swedish royal family was also invited.

Then, a week later, the AMB students traveled to the United States where they participated in the 2017 OCS Spring Spectacular concert.
