Math Enrichment

This class builds upon fundamental math skills to help incoming fifth and sixth students feel more prepared and confident. The goal is to lessen the amount of time needed to familiarize students with the above concepts (during the fall semester of sixth grade) and to increase the likelihood of skill mastery in these and other math areas.

The basic course outline will include:

·         Math Facts: multiplication and division tables, positive and negative integers and the number line.
·         Decimals: multiplication and division of, order of decimals, place value after decimal. Operations with decimals.
·         Basic fractions: addition and subtraction of, order and arrangement of fractions, what they represent, operations with fractions.
·         Order of operations

Pre-Algebra Readiness

Tuition:     $250
Dates:       June 17 – June 28
Days:        Monday – Friday
Time:         8:15am – 9:30am

Students will begin with a review of basic math skills and will focus on number sense and operations using formulas and problem solving. Students will also study probability and statistics to learn how to analyze and interpret graphs and data. Calculators are not permitted. Textbook will be provided. This course is designed for students needing to remediate 6th grade math or would like a jump start on pre-algebra.

Prerequisite: completion of a 6th grade math course.

Algebra Readiness (8th Grade Algebra Remediation)

Tuition:             $750
Dates:               June 17 – July 3
Days:                Monday – Friday
Time:                8:00am – 12:30pm

Students begin with a review of real numbers and algebraic properties, followed by a study of exponents, factoring, algebraic fractions, and graphing and solving linear functions. Strategies for solving word problems are integrated throughout the course.  Calculators are not permitted.  Textbook will be provided. This is NOT a UC-approved course. This course is designed for students needing to remediate 8th grade algebra readiness or would like a jump start on 8th grade algebra 1. This is an audit only/no credit course.

Prerequisite:  completion of a 7th grade pre-algebra course or algebra readiness.

 

Tech Training Enrichment and Study Skills Camp

This course is ideal for students wanting to improve organizational and time management skills. In addition, the course covers test taking strategies and prepares students for the rigors of the Oaks Christian curriculum.

Grammar Enrichment

Students will begin a unique study of the fundamentals of English grammar using the Shurley Method, our middle school grammar program.  This course is designed for NEW 6th - 8th grade OCS students only. Students will enter Oaks Christian with a better understanding how words work, which will keep them on track in their English classes.

 

Reading Strategies

Students will review a number of strategies to assist them with the challenges of reading comprehension. This course is designed for NEW 6th-8th grade OCS students. It will help them enter Oaks Christian with a better foundation for how to analyze a literature text

Speech and Debate Camp

Tuition:             $450
Dates:               July 29 – August 2
Days:                Monday – Friday
Time:                1:00pm – 5:00pm

This one-week summer camp will teach students practical techniques in construction of strategic, compelling arguments, speech preparation, research, refutation, persuasion, critical thinking and listening, all while learning to speak with clarity and conviction. The students will develop skills to effectively brainstorm a topic, build audience interest and attention, organize the speech, effective use of humor, and delivery strategies. Through many practice rounds, the camp will focus on the techniques and skills necessary to turn the novice speaker into a confident speaker, and the already experienced speaker into a polished speaker. At the end of the week, friends and family are invited on campus to hear the students give speeches and a debate using the skills they learned in camp.
