IDEALabOverview.jpg

The 14,000 square foot IDEA Lab (Innovation, Design, Engineering and Aeronautics) is unique in California, giving OCS students a jump in STEM career paths. The hub is the 4,000 square foot lab which houses metal and wood fabrication machines, 3D printers, and a variety of other tools typically found in college labs or industrial labs. Also included are robotics, physics and flex classrooms, a conference room, and a faculty core room. The IDEA Lab is home to our Institute of Engineering.

Robotics.jpg

The IDEA Lab is home to our robotics program, part of the aeronautics curriculum. Students are instructed by teachers who are also working professionals in the aeronautics industry. They learn how to how to build working rockets with an understanding of the propulsion, landing, electrical and software components. Student rockets will also be entered into regional and national competitions.

FiberOptic.jpg

Precision is the key as students in the Fiber Optic Technology Development Group learn how to splice a fiber optic cable that is about 5 microns in diameter. For comparison, a human hair is about 70 microns. They are developing the technology to sense acoustic vibration and temperature changes along the length of cable, another amazing educational experience afforded by the IDEA Lab.

Machinery.jpg

The high-level machinery in the IDEA Lab allows students to build practically anything, including robots, aerial and underwater drones, rockets and even basic prosthetics. In addition to learning the process of fabrication and manufacturing, students are also taught industry standards for safety and maintenance protocols.

Engineering.jpg

Not only is the IDEA Lab a place to learn about scientific concepts, but it is also a hands-on, practical work space to bring those concepts to life. Students work on a variety of projects, including building a water-worthy boat for the Los Angeles Metropolitan Water Annual Solar Cup competition using their math, engineering and physics knowledge. The race is the largest in the nation and Oaks Christian students have won in several categories.

MetalShopSign.jpg

Mechanical engineering students finish the fabrication of the metal shop sign for the IDEA lab, taking ownership of the space as they contribute to its design. As they drill the letters, they use CAD to design the signs, force diagrams and calculations to determine the loads and forces, and use power tools to assemble the final design.

ElectricCar.jpg

IDEA Lab students continue to innovate and design with the Switch Electric Vehicle! Students build an electric, street legal car from the ground up! Completely student run, the work is subdivided among smaller groups. Each group becomes an expert in batteries, dashboards, motors, wiring, or chassis. Groups learn to adapt and innovate when solving their building problems, one of the key goals of the IDEA Lab.
