Students will learn the engineering design process, engineering calculations, design documentation and presentation, and how to use tools safely and effectively. Students will complete one project from each of the four engineering disciplines, giving students direct experience on which to base a choice of pathways.
Students explore principles of rocket design, astrophysics, flight dynamics, and modeling of aeronautical systems. Projects include planes, gliders, weather balloons, and working rockets.
The Capstone Course will be largely student-directed, with students working on self-designed, interdisciplinary projects during unstructured class periods or after school. Students will write a
journal article and give a presentation on their completed capstone.
During the second semester of each Level 2 Focus Course, students will prepare a project proposal and begin working on the capstone project. Students will meet one-on-one with an adviser once each cycle and with a small group of peers pursuing similar projects once every 1-2 cycles.
