Oaks Christian School congratulates Performing Arts Department Chair Mary Kay Altizer for being named a distinguished alumna by Azusa Pacific University. Her alma mater honored her at a recent ceremony for her innovative blending of art and technology.
Along with OCS Choral Director Ed Rouse and OCS Band Director Ryan Kelly, Altizer pioneered an international collaboration with the Academy of Music and Business in Sweden. A forward-thinking creative, Altizer wanted to ensure music students were ready for a digital world. Graduating exceptional vocalists and instrumentalists wasn't enough: students needed marketing and business savvy to succeed in an ever-changing music industry.
That epiphany resulted in the partnership with the Academy of Music and Business which led to 12 OCS students traveling to Stockholm and a performance at the Swedish Embassy. Through the partnership, students learned how to hone their skills, develop their brand, and use Soundtrap technology to create. In turn, AMB students came to Oaks Christian and performed as part of the annual Spring Spectacular.
The unique project caught the attention of Altizer's alma mater and she was honored this month as a Distinguished Alumni for Innovation for using active learning, experimentation, collaboration, and technology to inspire creative and innovative teaching and learning.
