Semper Fortis, Commander Coyle!

In every season of life, there comes a time of change and transition. In the U.S. Navy, this moment is marked by the “Change of Command,” a time-honored tradition signifying the end of one chapter of leadership and the beginning of another. 

For Commander Karen Coyle, that moment arrives this May as she formally retires after 25 years as a deeply beloved member of the Oaks Christian School community. 

Commander Coyle joined the OCS family in August 2001, following a distinguished 20-year career in the U.S. Navy, where she concluded her service as executive officer of the Pacific Missile Test Squadron at Point Mugu. In a meaningful moment, then-Headmaster Jeff Woodcock attended her Navy Change of Command ceremony, welcoming her to Oaks Christian just two days later as the school’s dean of women. 

Soon after, her role evolved into dean of students, a position she would hold for 16 years. In that time, she became a steady and compassionate presence on campus, investing deeply in the lives of students and building a culture of care, accountability, and belonging. Her leadership was marked by a genuine love for students and a commitment to helping each one thrive. 

In 2017, Commander Coyle was appointed interim high school principal and was soon named to the role permanently. As principal, she partnered closely with faculty, supporting and equipping teachers so they could, in turn, serve students with excellence. 

After six impactful years in that role, she transitioned to the advancement team, where she reconnected with alumni and their families—relationships that remain one of the most meaningful aspects of her legacy. Her bond with former students runs deep; many still text, visit, and share updates with her about their lives well beyond graduation. 

“I have loved my time at this school,” she reflected. “The people are what make the difference. Our teachers truly love our students, and they know and feel that.” 

Her years at Oaks Christian are filled with cherished memories—the freshman river trips, senior retreats, and unforgettable Homecoming weeks among them. 

“All of these will remain forever in my memory,” she said, “along with the friendships with teachers and students that I treasure.” 

At the heart of her service has been a clear and unwavering purpose.

“My greatest joy at Oaks Christian has been to serve our Lord Jesus Christ and share the gospel with our students. My hope for the school’s future is that Oaks will always ‘keep the main thing the main thing,’” she said.

As she prepares for her own Change of Command, Commander Coyle looks ahead to a new season filled with adventure—traveling to Australia and beyond, spending time with her four grandchildren in Australia and San Diego, golfing with her husband and sisters, and even picking up a new passion for pickleball. 

Though this chapter is coming to a close, her impact on Oaks Christian will continue to be felt for generations to come. 

Though she will not be in any “official” OCS role, her door and phone are always open to connect with the alumni she has served and loved so well.
